Shooting at Chico Library Claims Two Lives, Injures Child
2 killed child injured in shooting – A tragic shooting at the Chico library left two adults dead and a child with injuries, according to local authorities. The incident occurred on Monday at the Butte County Library located on Sherman and East 1st avenues in Chico, California.
Law enforcement received calls about an active shooter around 5 p.m. and responded promptly. An open 911 line enabled dispatchers to hear gunshots and people shouting inside the building as they arrived. As officers entered the premises, the suspect fled through the rear, where additional officers stationed around the area swiftly apprehended them.
Officials confirmed that the suspect acted alone and was captured without any resistance. A single firearm was recovered at the scene. Notably, no police officers fired their weapons during the event, and none sustained injuries.
The child’s condition is described as minor, though authorities have not disclosed the victims’ identities. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation. East 1st Avenue was temporarily closed between Sheridan and Arbutus avenues to ensure safety and facilitate the probe.
Community Response and Statements
“I am heartbroken by this senseless violence and am praying for the victims, their loved ones, and everyone affected by this tragedy,” said Rep. James Gallagher (R-East Nicolaus). “Thank you to the brave officers and first responders who protected our community. Chico is strong, and we will stand united moving forward.”
“Our hearts are with the Chico community tonight,” stated California Gov. Gavin Newsom. “We appreciate the rapid actions of law enforcement to secure the scene and detain the suspect. No family should face such a loss.”
The Chico Police Department is overseeing the investigation, with support from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI. Further updates are expected as the inquiry progresses.
