These older, more rural populations face heightened health risks from loneliness and social isolation. Since May, authorities have documented over 11,000 cyclosporiasis cases—caused by a parasitic infection—across 41 states. This outbreak follows substantial reductions by the Trump administration in FDA and CDC personnel. Additional measures included dissolving a national advisory committee focused on preventing microbial food contamination, scaling back an early-warning surveillance system for particular pathogens, and postponing a regulation that would have mandated tracking contaminants from production fields through retail stores.
Correspondent David Pogue speaks with specialists who characterize these current food safety compromises as “a national wake-up call.”
