Despite her doctor’s initial assessment that nothing concerning appeared on her ultrasound, she trusted her instincts. “Something just said, ‘You need to check again,'” she recalled. Both father and daughter agreed that Melanie would have died without questioning those first results. “It was a super aggressive kind of breast cancer, and it had already escaped the breast wall and had gone into my chest,” Shatner Gretsch explained.
“I always felt that somehow we would survive,” Shatner said.
Support Through Treatment
Melanie underwent an intensive treatment regimen that included months of chemotherapy, 30 rounds of radiation, a double mastectomy, and a year of immunotherapy. Throughout this challenging period, she leaned heavily on her father for emotional support. The 61-year-old recalled one particularly vulnerable night when she reached out to Shatner. “I was just in one of those moments where you want your daddy, you know, like you’re little, you’re feeling very little and you’re feeling this is really scary,” she said. Shatner Gretsch described her father as “a source of calm” during her darkest moments.
“He got out of bed and drove over here, gave me the bear hug,” she said. “He said to me, ‘This is just a blip in your life. You’re going to get past this.'” The father-daughter duo’s connection deepened as they navigated their respective treatments, with Shatner providing both wisdom and comfort to his daughter.
Looking Forward Together
Through their emotional journey, Shatner Gretsch remembers receiving her first clear PET scan early in her treatment and calling her father with the news. “It was the third time I heard you cry in my whole life,” she told him. For Shatner, who is now 95 years old, this experience reinforced his instinct as a father to protect. “Here was something I couldn’t protect and then I didn’t need to protect, she was going to be all right,” he said.
Both are now cancer-free and have decided to share their inspiring story through a new podcast called “No Time But Now,” which premieres on Wednesday. Shatner revealed that he originally chose not to disclose his diagnosis because he feared it might impact his ability to continue working in an industry he loves.
