James is now set to challenge Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson in the November general election. Benson captured the Democratic nomination in her party’s primary contest.

A Political Journey to the Governor’s Mansion

James formally entered the gubernatorial race in April 2025, bringing extensive public service experience to the campaign. His background includes eight years as an aviation officer in the U.S. Army alongside leadership of a supply chain and logistics solutions organization. Before seeking the governorship, James contested two U.S. Senate races, falling short in 2018 against Debbie Stabenow and in 2020 to Gary Peters.

His congressional career featured two successful reelection bids against Democrat Carl Marlinga in 2022 and 2024. James’s bid for governor has opened Michigan’s 10th Congressional district for a new representative. Addressing the vacancy, James noted, “But we all know that having a strong top of ticket is the greatest indicator that we’ll have success for Republicans up and down the ticket.”

Trump’s endorsement proved pivotal in James’s campaign, prompting former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox to withdraw from the race. Additionally, Representative Aric Nesbitt threw his support behind James after suspending his own campaign in June.

Johnson Brings Business Acumen to the Race

Perry Johnson, a veteran of the American automotive sector, declared his candidacy for governor in January 2026. Johnson previously sought the governorship in 2022 but was disqualified due to invalid petition signatures. He also participated in the 2024 presidential race, though he did not meet the requirements for the GOP debate series.

Emphasizing his corporate background, Johnson stated, “My business experience brought quality and efficiency to help save the auto industry. We can deliver better services at lower cost by running state government with efficiency, accountability, and a results-driven mindset.”

Policy Priorities Take Center Stage

During his time in Congress, James concentrated on national security matters, energy independence, and backing law enforcement initiatives. More recently, he has addressed the Canadian wildfire smoke that affected Michigan throughout the summer, triggering multiple statewide air quality warnings. James joins other legislators urging Canadian authorities to implement measures reducing wildfire impacts. Should he assume the governorship, James pledged to prioritize safeguarding Michigan’s natural resources. “We absolutely need to make sure that we are resilient for extreme weather, and making sure that we’re doing that in all seasons,” he explained.

Johnson’s economic agenda centers on abolishing Michigan’s state income tax. According to his calculations, this change would allow an average household to retain approximately $4,747 annually. To offset the revenue shortfall, Johnson proposed auditing state expenditures to identify areas where funding produces measurable outcomes while emphasizing operational efficiency. He also advocates for property tax restructuring.

Johnson has financed his campaign independently using personal wealth, yet he recalls growing up with minimal financial resources. “When you’ve been there, and you’ve been in that kind of environment, you have an entirely different perspective,” he remarked.
