Caleb Flynn, former “American Idol” contestant, convicted in wife’s killing
Wertynews.com – Caleb Flynn, former American Idol contestant and pastor, was found guilty in the murder of his wife, Ashley Flynn, after a jury rejected his account that an intruder entered their Tipp City, Ohio, home and shot her.
Flynn, 40, was convicted on nine counts: aggravated murder, three murder counts, two felonious-assault counts and three counts of tampering with evidence. Jurors also found that a firearm was used in seven of the offenses, a finding that can increase sentencing consequences.
Sentencing was scheduled for Oct. 5. Flynn became emotional as the verdict was announced and was later seen hunched over while lawyers discussed possible sentencing dates with the judge.
Prosecutors said the break-in was staged
Ashley Flynn, 37, was shot twice in the back of the head while she slept on Feb. 16, prosecutors said. They alleged that Flynn then tried to create the appearance of a burglary before calling 911 and claiming that an unknown intruder was responsible.
The firearm used in the shooting was never recovered. Flynn maintained that he was in the room of the couple’s daughter, Ava, when he heard shots from elsewhere in the home.
Police body-camera video captured Flynn crying after the 911 call and asking an officer whether his wife had died.
“Is she, is she gone, sir?”
FBI Special Agent Sarah Deamron testified that the home’s door did not show signs typically associated with forced entry. She said there were no exterior pry marks, kick marks or ram marks, while damage appeared on interior trim.
Deamron told jurors that she had examined about 75 forced doors and did not believe the damage was consistent with a person breaking into the home from outside.
Text messages became central evidence
Alleigha Botner, 24, testified that she had an approximately 18-month sexual relationship with Flynn after meeting him while she was an intern at his church. She described extensive communication between them, including messages in which Flynn expressed anger toward Ashley and a desire for her to die.
Botner said they exchanged tens of thousands of messages and took steps to hide their communications. She acknowledged that she initially lied to the FBI. Her phone and work laptop were lost weeks before Ashley Flynn’s death, preventing investigators from retrieving messages directly from those devices. Messages were recovered from Caleb and Ashley Flynn’s phones.
“I hate him.”
Jurors reviewed messages that prosecutors said showed Flynn’s hostility toward his wife. In one message dated Feb. 11, 2025, Flynn wrote:
“I need her to die, to cheat again, to leave.”
In other exchanges, he wrote that he hated Ashley and wanted her gone. On March 24, 2025, when Botner asked what she could do, he replied:
“Kill her.”
Another message described him staying awake until 4 a.m. thinking about ways to kill Ashley without going to jail. He also wrote that he would act immediately if he could do so without going to hell.
Messages before Ashley Flynn’s death
Botner testified that Flynn discussed separating from Ashley several times beginning around August 2025. She said she set deadlines in October, November, December and possibly January, with Jan. 11, 2026, becoming her final deadline for him to separate.
After that deadline, Botner stopped communicating with him until Feb. 14, two days before Ashley Flynn was killed. During the period without contact, Flynn sent her a song he wrote containing the line:
“Life is now empty since the moment I lost you.”
Messages from the night before the killing were closely examined during the trial. Flynn wrote, “It’s happening,” “actions will come tomorrow,” “I choose you,” and “about to be free.” He also described Feb. 16 as a day he would never forget and referred to the following day as a big day.
Botner testified that she believed “actions” referred to divorce rather than violence.
Defense acknowledged affair, denied murder
Defense attorneys acknowledged Flynn’s affair with Botner but argued that infidelity did not prove he killed his wife. Attorney Emily Smith told jurors that Flynn had been asleep in Ava’s room and woke only after hearing gunfire.
