The victims included nine male and three female residents, with eleven fatalities recorded at the scene and a twelfth succumbing to wounds in a hospital.

A local councilor noted that while the settlement is a hub for such operations, other community tensions—such as disputes over land—also exist. He emphasized that the responsibility for the killings had not yet been definitively established.

"There are a lot of moving parts here so it's hard to pinpoint exactly what is driving the issues," said Councilor Neuren Pietersen during an interview with eNCA TV.

Provincial police commissioner Tommy Mthombeni declined to connect the attack directly to illegal mining until further evidence is gathered. He described the incident as "insane, heartless, and to an extent, barbaric," according to AFP. Mthombeni mentioned that police had previously conducted sweeps in the area, seizing weapons and making arrests, though the current attackers remained at large.

Residents reported that some individuals from Lesotho, a neighboring nation, reside in the settlement. This adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing inquiry into the attack's origins. The police have deployed specialist crime intelligence officers to the scene to assist in the investigation.
