Multiple Attackers Carry Out Mass Shooting in Johannesburg, South Africa, Leaving Dozen Dead and Nine Injured
Mass shooting by multiple attackers leaves - Authorities in Johannesburg reported on Wednesday that a late-night assault by over a dozen suspects resulted in the deaths of at least 12 individuals and injuries to nine others. The attack occurred in an informal settlement within the Cleveland suburb, where the perpetrators exited a minibus and systematically targeted residents before fleeing in the same vehicle.
The incident, which took place shortly after 11 p.m. on Tuesday, was described as having elements of organized criminal activity. While police are investigating the motive, the attack is suspected to be linked to rival gangs competing for dominance in illegal mining operations. The victims included nine male and three female residents, with eleven fatalities recorded at the scene and a twelfth succumbing to wounds in a hospital.
Context of the Shooting
Informal settlements in South Africa are typically unplanned communities where individuals reside in makeshift shelters. These areas, often located near major cities, are prone to various social and economic challenges. On the day of the attack, ambulances were deployed to transport the bodies, while some locals gathered on the streets, uncertain of the ongoing threat.
Cleveland, the site of the shooting, is known for its association with illegal mining activities. A local councilor noted that while the settlement is a hub for such operations, other community tensions—such as disputes over land—also exist. He emphasized that the responsibility for the killings had not yet been definitively established.
Officials' Statements and Ongoing Investigations
"There are a lot of moving parts here so it's hard to pinpoint exactly what is driving the issues," said Councilor Neuren Pietersen during an interview with eNCA TV.
Provincial police commissioner Tommy Mthombeni declined to connect the attack directly to illegal mining until further evidence is gathered. He described the incident as "insane, heartless, and to an extent, barbaric," according to AFP. Mthombeni mentioned that police had previously conducted sweeps in the area, seizing weapons and making arrests, though the current attackers remained at large.
Residents reported that some individuals from Lesotho, a neighboring nation, reside in the settlement. This adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing inquiry into the attack's origins. The police have deployed specialist crime intelligence officers to the scene to assist in the investigation.
South Africa's Crime Landscape
South Africa has witnessed a surge in mass shootings, including two incidents in December that claimed over 20 lives. These attacks often involve multiple shooters and are associated with criminal gangs operating in regions rich in natural resources like gold. In Johannesburg, such gangs are known to exploit abandoned mines for illicit mining, engaging in violent turf wars to assert control.
Official crime statistics reveal the country recorded more than 23,000 homicides during the previous financial year, averaging over 60 deaths per day. The government's decision to deploy the army to high-risk areas in March was a response to rising violence tied to organized crime. This move underscored the challenge authorities face in curbing gang-related activities in urban centers like Johannesburg.
