At Least 5 People Stabbed at Penn Station. Here's What We Know
At least 5 people stabbed at Penn - On Sunday evening, a stabbing at New York City’s Penn Station resulted in six individuals being transported to a hospital. While at least five victims sustained knife wounds, the severity of one person’s injuries was noted by the Fire Department of New York (FDNY). The motive behind the sixth person’s hospitalization remains under investigation.
Amtrak Police Secure Suspect
Amtrak Police launched a search for the attacker, swiftly securing a suspect, as stated by the rail operator in a press release. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. on Sunday. A knife was recovered from the scene, and authorities urged the public to avoid the area due to anticipated traffic delays, road closures, and disruptions to mass transit systems.
“The alleged perpetrator is in custody following a swift response from the Amtrak Police Department. My heart is with everyone who was injured, their loved ones, and all those shaken by this unacceptable violence. I’m wishing each of the victims a full and speedy recovery,” said Mayor Mamdani in a Sunday night statement.
The mayor also expressed gratitude to the Amtrak Police and first responders for their prompt actions in apprehending the suspect and providing emergency care. Current reports indicate no disruptions to Amtrak service, though officials are coordinating with the city’s administration to investigate further.
Details on the Suspect
Video footage captured at least four Amtrak officers subduing the suspect at the scene. A witness described the officers using pepper spray before tackling the individual. “They had to get other cops in order to grab him,” the witness noted.
“He was just screaming, waving his head around,” said Michael Christian, a witness who had previously seen the suspect but did not believe he was capable of such an act.
Police sources identified the suspect as an emotionally disturbed individual with no known ties to terrorism. A law enforcement official close to the case confirmed that preliminary reports point to a random act of violence, emphasizing the absence of a terror nexus in the stabbing.
