Jury Deadlocked in Palisades Fire Arson Case

Jury remains deadlocked in trial of Palisades - The trial of Jonathan Rinderknecht, charged with igniting the devastating Palisades Fire in 2025, has stalled as jurors remain divided. Earlier on Thursday, the jury had signaled they had finalized their decision, only to later send a message to the judge stating they were unable to reach a consensus, per the U.S. Department of Justice. The judge dismissed the jury shortly after, with a new session scheduled for Friday at 9 a.m.

Fire’s Origins and Prosecution Claims

Prosecutors allege that Rinderknecht, a 30-year-old Florida resident, deliberately started a fire in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood on January 1, 2025. This blaze merged with the Lachman Fire, which had ignited the same day, forming the Palisades Fire. The DOJ stated that the fire was classified as a "holdover" event, continuing to smolder beneath the surface even after initial suppression efforts.

"No matter what the government's theory is, the evidence will show Jonathan did not start the Jan. 1 fire," said defense attorney Steve Haney, emphasizing that Rinderknecht initially reported the fire to 911 and fled the scene before returning to observe emergency vehicles.

Contradictory Testimony and Evidence

Rinderknecht’s defense claims he was merely an eyewitness to the flames. However, prosecutors argue he was emotionally charged and intentionally set the fire, citing geolocation data from his phone that placed him just 30 feet from the flames as they spread. During an interview on January 24, 2025, Rinderknecht allegedly provided false information about his location at the fire’s onset.

The Palisades Fire, fueled by extreme winds and heat, scorched over 23,000 acres across the Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and Santa Monica mountains. Cal Fire confirmed 12 fatalities and the destruction of more than 6,800 structures. The blaze was fully contained by January 31, 2025, marking it as the third most destructive fire in California’s history. Rinderknecht faces a minimum of five years and a maximum of 45 years in federal prison if convicted.
