Northern California hit by 5.6 magnitude earthquake in Mendocino County

Northern California hit by 5 6 magnitude - A 5.6 magnitude seismic event occurred in Mendocino County on Wednesday, prompting ShakeAlert alerts across Northern California. The tremor struck at 8:10 a.m. Pacific Time, with its epicenter approximately seven miles north of Redwood Valley, a sparsely populated region within the county.

The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed the quake's location and noted that residents were alerted via ShakeAlert, a system designed to provide early warnings for earthquakes in California, Washington, and Oregon. Following the main shock, a preliminary 2.5 magnitude tremor was recorded seven minutes later, possibly as an aftershock. Additional smaller quakes measuring 2.7 and 2.6 were reported within the subsequent hour.

Some injuries were documented by local authorities, though no fatalities were confirmed. Shaking was felt as far as Sacramento, and minor power disruptions were reported near the epicenter in Willits. PG&E indicated that the outages began simultaneously with the quake, affecting around 8,000 customers. While no equipment damage was noted, the utility company deployed emergency crews to address potential gas and electrical risks.

The USGS classified the quake's depth as roughly five miles, and its impact alert level was set to yellow, suggesting localized damage might occur. The National Tsunami Warning Center confirmed no tsunami threat, advisory, or watch was issued. Fort Bragg, located about 50 miles west of the epicenter, reported no damage, with police monitoring the situation.

California Governor Encourages Preparedness

Mendocino County officials stated they had not observed significant structural damage, though assessments were ongoing. California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office noted he had been updated on the event. In a statement, Newsom emphasized the importance of readiness, stating:

"It's not a matter of if, but when the next earthquake will occur. I encourage all Californians to download the MyShake app and enable emergency alerts on their phones to receive timely notifications."

Meanwhile, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake rattled Venezuela in the evening, leading to tsunami advisories in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Shortly after, a 6.9 magnitude quake hit off Japan’s eastern coast. Redwood Valley, situated about 120 miles north of San Francisco and 140 miles northwest of Sacramento, remains a focal point for ongoing monitoring.
