Russia Sanctions Teen Son of Anticorruption Campaigner Over Crypto Laundering Report

Young Activist's Allegations Spark New Sanctions

Russia sanctions teen son of anticorruption - A 17-year-old British student, Alexander Browder, has been added to Russia’s list of sanctioned individuals, marking him as one of the youngest to face such measures. His father, Bill Browder, a former financier turned anticorruption crusader, has long been at odds with Moscow. Alexander claims his actions exposed a cryptocurrency network allegedly used by Russia to circumvent U.S. sanctions.

"My work is about tracing financial flows," Browder explained to CBS News. "By sanctioning me, the Kremlin has shown that following this trail unsettles them."

According to reports, the Russian government included Alexander on its banned list in June. They cited his publication of "disinformation" as the reason. Yet he dismissed the move, stating, "Russia's decision to include me on their list of sanctioned individuals doesn't alter the truth, and it won’t change my commitment."

A Stablecoin Designed to Bypass Sanctions

Alexander's investigation revealed a Russian stablecoin called A7A5, created in 2025. He alleges this digital currency processed over $100 billion in transactions last year, primarily through Kyrgyzstan-based exchanges. The tool, he claims, allows Moscow to evade restrictions from the U.S., U.K., and European Union.

Legacy of a Decades-Long Struggle

The younger Browder's actions are rooted in his family's history of fighting corruption. His father, Bill, was sanctioned by Russia in 2005 and has spent years battling the Kremlin after uncovering a $230 million tax fraud scheme. In the 1990s, Bill managed Hermitage Fund, Russia’s largest foreign investment entity at the time.

"I made a promise to his memory, to his family, and to myself to pursue justice for those who killed him," Bill Browder said during a 2022 interview. "That’s why I’ve dedicated every resource to exposing the people responsible."

Technology Outpaces Tradition

Alexander noted that while the methods for uncovering fraud remain unchanged, the tools now required are more advanced. He described his father as "a dinosaur in this aspect," emphasizing that his generation has adapted to new financial systems. "Cryptocurrency has become a fresh route for Russian money laundering," he stated. "It’s not a crime without consequences."

Despite his age, Alexander acknowledges the risks of opposing Russia. He said, "Violence and kidnapping have always been threats in my life, but I’ve never backed down. If I can help reveal how these funds fuel violence abroad, then I’ll have done my part."
