Trump at G7 Summit in France: Iran Agreement and Strategic Moves
Trump in G7 summit in France – On Monday, President Trump traveled to France for the Group of Seven summit, where he highlighted the recent Iran memorandum. During a bilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, the leader announced that the agreement with Iran is “all signed,” signaling momentum toward clearing the Strait of Hormuz. “The deal’s all signed,” he stated alongside Macron, adding that the strait is already “partially opened.”
“And the strait is already partially opened,” the president said in France alongside Macron.
According to a senior administration official, Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf jointly signed the deal. However, the president hinted the text might not be released until “after sometime after Friday,” the day of the formal signing ceremony. He noted his absence from the event, with Vance representing him.
This year’s G7 summit, hosted in Evian-les-Bains, France—a picturesque alpine town by Lake Geneva—will include discussions on the Iran agreement. The U.S. will also collaborate with Britain and France to deploy ships in the Strait of Hormuz, aiding mine removal efforts. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized the U.S. role in securing the waterway.
Summit Agenda and Diplomatic Engagement
While Iran remains a focal point, the summit will address economic growth, supply chain stability, immigration policies, and artificial intelligence integration. Ukraine will also feature prominently in the leaders’ discussions. After meeting Macron, Trump joined a working dinner with other G7 heads of state.
The G7 comprises the U.S., France, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom. The European Union, though not listed explicitly, is a permanent member of the group. Trump’s schedule for Tuesday includes working sessions with G7 leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as well as bilateral meetings with Qatar’s emir and the UAE’s president.
On Wednesday, the president is set to meet with Egypt’s leader and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He will also attend a tech innovation and AI-focused session with G7 members and conclude the summit with a dinner at the Palace of Versailles with Macron. Departure from France is planned for the following day.
