The commitment runs a minimum of two years and stretches up to six. Twenty soldiers have already locked in this particular incentive as part of their decision to stay, Tomko told CBS News on Wednesday.

The initiative was not rolled out across the entire service. It originated as a proposal confined to that single battalion, though officials acknowledged it could be broadened if demand warrants.

“The idea was to have a unique incentives program that connects to what Soldiers are interested in,” Lt. Col. Angel Tomko said in a statement. “The command team, in conjunction with the career counselor, wanted to get soldiers excited to reenlist.”

A Longer History of Courtship

Offering gamers something tangible is not a novel tactic for the Army. After missing its annual recruiting target in 2018 for the first time in over a decade, the service began casting a wider net beyond traditional recruiting stations and cold-call campaigns. Recruiters started showing up at gaming conventions, and the Army stood up an esports squad competing in titles such as Call of Duty, Fortnite, and League of Legends to scout potential enlistees.

“Yes,” Muth replied. “It’s the decision-making, it’s the ability to take in a lot of information quickly and to be able to make a decision … It’s about teamwork.”
