The 41-year-old is expected to play power forward alongside Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, and Joel Embiid. That lineup could form the most formidable starting five in the league.
Even as the NBA’s oldest active player, James continues to perform at an elite level. Last season earned him his 22nd All-Star selection while he averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds in 60 games.
His arrival addresses Philadelphia’s need for size and rebounding at the power forward spot. Beyond that, James provides secondary ball-handling that could help distribute the load for Maxey, giving head coach Nick Nurse more flexibility in his rotations. While James will certainly have nights where he scores 30 or more points, the supporting cast of Maxey, Embiid, Brown, and Edgecombe gives him plenty of help.
Embiid’s Health Will Be Deciding Factor
Joel Embiid’s durability will play a crucial role in Philadelphia’s playoff success. Over the past three seasons, the center has appeared in just 96 regular-season games. Embiid recovered from an emergency appendectomy during the first round of last year’s postseason and delivered what many viewed as his finest playoff performance, leading the Sixers to a stunning comeback against the Boston Celtics.
However, his body failed him again during the second-round series with the New York Knicks, causing him to miss a game as Philadelphia fell in a sweep. Even with the new addition, Embiid’s availability will determine the team’s postseason ceiling.
Gansey’s Quick Roster Overhaul
Mike Gansey assumed control of basketball operations from Daryl Morey in May and immediately began reshaping the roster. Securing James represents his biggest acquisition yet, but Gansey executed several other moves that made Philadelphia an attractive destination for the free agent.
The Jaylen Brown trade with the Celtics—sending Paul George and draft picks to their Eastern Conference rivals—proved essential. Rich Paul, LeBron’s representative, noted on his podcast that the Brown acquisition “changed everything” regarding Philadelphia’s appeal as a landing spot.
Before that pivotal move, Gansey initiated free agency by bringing in forward Dean Wade, who spent seven seasons with the Cavaliers. Wade was originally slated to become Philadelphia’s starting power forward but will now serve as a depth option following James’s arrival.
The front office also bolstered bench scoring through the draft selection of Alabama guard Labaron Philon Jr. and the addition of veteran guard Anfernee Simons, who played for the Celtics and Bulls last season. Ariel Hukporti, a former Knicks center, was signed to strengthen frontcourt depth alongside Adem Bona.
