83 Year Old Man Who Went Missing Near Grand Canyon Rescued After Overnight Search

Gerald Guinn, a Utah resident identified by the National Park Service, was hiking with a companion at approximately 12:30 p.m. on July 21 when the incident occurred in a remote area along the edge of the Kaibab National Forest, Kane County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The separation happened when Guinn and his hiking partner decided to split up temporarily to search for a nearby historic object in the scenic landscape. Unfortunately, Guinn failed to reunite with his companion as expected, prompting the other hiker to begin searching for several hours before requesting assistance from authorities. The Kane County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team immediately responded, conducting an overnight search utilizing drones and search dogs, though initial efforts proved unsuccessful in locating the missing hiker.
Coordinated Rescue Efforts Pay Off
The following morning brought renewed hope as the Grand Canyon National Park Service assumed control of the search operations, according to the sheriff’s office. The NPS contributed additional resources including a helicopter and ground teams to expand the search area. The Kane County search and rescue team rejoined the efforts that afternoon, creating a comprehensive multi-agency operation. A crucial breakthrough came in the early afternoon when the NPS received a cell phone ping that indicated Guinn’s general location, providing valuable information to narrow down the search area.
“The ping moved the search to the east, and an NPS helicopter quickly located Guinn, who was well enough to wave to the pilot,” said a spokesperson for the National Park Service.
Unfortunately, the helicopter could not land in the area due to challenging terrain conditions, so a Kane County search and rescue team was dispatched to assess and stabilize Guinn on-site. The rescue team found the elderly hiker to be “in good spirits, just cold, and non-ambulatory,” according to official reports. The team immediately provided liquids and warm layers to help Guinn recover from the exposure.
The transportation back to the road required approximately 20 people working together to move Guinn safely. Team members carried the man while simultaneously clearing downed logs and flagging potential hazards along the route. Once Guinn reached the road, he was met by Kane County emergency medical services personnel who conducted a thorough examination before clearing and releasing him.
The entire rescue operation was completed at 1:30 a.m., approximately a day and a half after the 83 year old man who went missing first began his hike. The successful rescue demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated search and rescue efforts involving multiple agencies and the importance of modern technology like cell phone pings and drones in locating missing persons in remote areas.
