Dental records confirmed the identification, as stated by Jackson County coroner Bruce Lynd.
“Nolan Wells was a beloved son, teammate, and friend who went out to celebrate the Fourth of July and never came home. His family deserves answers. They deserve the truth,” said Ben Crump in a statement released Tuesday.
Investigation Progress
As the investigation unfolds, details about Nolan’s final hours are emerging. Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter reported that Nolan had traveled to Horn Island by boat with friends on Saturday but did not return with them. His mother, Christine Wonsley, alerted authorities later that evening, prompting a coordinated search. Friends are cooperating with investigators, providing critical information about the teenager’s movements.
According to Ledbetter, “From the people we’ve talked to, it sounds like he chose to stay on the island with the assumption that he was going to ride back to the mainland with someone else.” This insight adds context to the circumstances of his disappearance, though the exact cause of death remains under scrutiny.
Family’s Response and Community Support
Nolan, who would have turned 19 in August, was a student at Southwest Mississippi Community College and a standout wide receiver on the football team. His high school coach, Tracy Lampley, described him as “a happy-go-lucky kid with a big smile that everybody adored and loved.” Lampley highlighted Nolan’s athletic prowess, academic dedication, and respectful demeanor, underscoring the personal impact of his loss.
Wonsley expressed her grief in a heartfelt social media post, stating, “My heart is broken for our sweet son who was always willing to cheer and uplift others.” She emphasized Nolan’s unique spirit, writing, “Nolan was a special soul, God took his time creating our son.” The emotional outpouring from the community reflects the deep connection many have to the young man.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is actively seeking public assistance, asking anyone with information about Nolan’s whereabouts or interactions on Horn Island to come forward. Investigators are particularly interested in “original, unedited photos and videos taken on the northwest tip of Horn Island,” which could shed light on any alleged altercations or activities involving the teenager.
Community members and volunteers have played a vital role in the search. Brian Trascher, national vice president of the United Cajun Navy—a group known for aiding search efforts—identified Nolan’s body while flying over the island. “They were setting up a tactical operation center or command post on the beach,” he said. “Shortly after, I started getting texts from my guys on the ground that they recovered who they believed to be Nolan.”
