Several Killed in Small Plane Crash in the Bahamas, Officials Say

Wertynews.com – Aircraft accident in the Bahamas claimed multiple lives on Friday, leading to the temporary suspension of Flamingo Air operations. The incident occurred in North Andros, a region situated west of Nassau, the capital of the Bahamian archipelago.

Officials have yet to provide specifics about the passengers or their current status. A flight manifest accessed by CBS News indicates the plane was carrying ten individuals. Among them were members of the Da Pond Band, a musical ensemble, according to an aviation source.

Prime Minister’s Statement

“We gather beneath a cloud of great sorrow,” stated Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis during a press briefing. He initially reported one survivor but later confirmed the person succumbed to their injuries. “It has become a day of mourning,” he added, reflecting on the nation’s 53rd independence anniversary.

The Bahamian Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority detailed that the plane, a Cessna 402 registered locally, departed from Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau and was en route to San Andros when the crash took place.

Minister JoBeth Coleby-Davis of Energy, Utilities and Aviation noted that the suspension of Flamingo Air’s air operator certificate is a precautionary measure. This decision follows two safety incidents reported on Friday. The first involved a Flamingo Air plane that turned back to Nassau after a pilot reported an issue while traveling to Mayaguana. Upon landing, the aircraft caught fire, she explained.
