AI actor Tilly Norwood set to star – Particle6, a U.K.-based studio pioneering AI-driven media, has launched the development of its first full-length feature film, “Misaligned,” featuring Tilly Norwood as the lead. This groundbreaking project marks the debut of the synthetic actor, who was introduced to the public in 2025 after extensive refinement by the team. The film explores the intersection of artificial intelligence and human creativity, aiming to showcase the potential of AI in storytelling.
Studio’s Vision and Development Process
The studio, Particle6, positions itself as an “AI-first and AI-hybrid” innovator in entertainment. Its creators, including founder Eline van der Velden—a former actor—developed over 2,000 versions of the AI tool before settling on Norwood’s final form. The film is set in a “surreal digital world located somewhere up in the Cloud,” blending elements of a coming-of-age narrative with existential AI themes.
Self-Referential Narrative and Thematic Depth
Norwood’s character is an AI entity that lacks personal experiences but possesses access to human childhood memories and backstories. The plot, described by Particle6 as “self-referential,” delves into the complexities of identity and performance. “The film will be humorously chaotic and self-aware, she noted, adding that it’s ‘very Tilly.’ But beneath the surface, there’s something deeper about identity, performance, and our human fears around AI. And yes, art will most definitely be imitating life,” van der Velden emphasized.
“AI can support premium narrative filmmaking, but only with substantial amounts of human craft, skill, judgment and time. That’s not a limitation of the technology. That’s the point,” said van der Velden.
Industry Backlash and Union Concerns
Since Norwood’s introduction, the entertainment industry has faced mixed reactions. Movie professionals argued that acting roles should remain exclusive to humans, with SAG-AFTRA issuing a statement in September declaring Norwood not an actor. The union stressed that “creativity is, and should remain, human-centered,” highlighting tensions around AI’s role in production.
AI in Production and Labor Agreements
Discussions over AI’s use in film production reached a critical point in 2023, with SAG-AFTRA and major studios negotiating guardrails for technology. These talks resulted in the first 15-year strike in the industry, as unions sought guarantees against AI replacing human creatives. The final agreement now limits AI’s integration in film and television workflows.
